MANILA, Philippines – As a new generation of kids are growing up in an ever-changing, technology-dependent world, it is essential to adapt and evolve our methods to support their growth and development.
Thankfully, child development centers have emerged as modern solutions, offering innovative and fun ways to nurture young minds and bodies.
Far more than just play areas, these child development centers empower children to grow into confident, well-rounded individuals, ready to take on the world through exploration, connection, and individualized care.
To gain a deeper understanding of the benefits these facilities offer, Rappler spoke with Dr. Ivan Neil Gomez, an occupational therapist at the Sandbox Clinic, to explore why enrolling your kids in these centers could make all the difference.
Understanding occupational therapy
“Occupational therapy helps individuals participate in activities they want, need, or are expected to do,” Gomez said. These activities — referred to as “occupations” — range from self-care tasks and academic responsibilities to social interactions, all of which form the foundation of a child’s development.
Children may face obstacles in participating in meaningful activities due to various conditions. “We work with children to develop the skills necessary for daily life,” Gomez said. This includes improving motor skills, enhancing focus and attention, and fostering social skills through guided interventions.
Play is integral to therapy as it is “a powerful tool in occupational therapy.” Through activities like obstacle courses, therapists help children develop gross and fine motor skills, cognitive abilities, and teamwork. “We tailor these activities to make therapy effective and enjoyable.”
Choosing the right facility
Gomez advised parents to carefully evaluate developmental facilities. “Make sure the services align with your child’s needs and that the therapists are qualified,” he said. The right facility should offer specialized tools and interventions in a structured, nurturing environment.
According to Gomez, the primary goal of occupational therapy is to equip children with the skills they need to navigate daily life with confidence and independence. This approach empowers them to overcome obstacles and unlock their full potential.
Here are some recommended playground centers in and outside Metro Manila where parents can enroll their kids for a fun and fruitful time!
Kinetix Kids
Located in Podium Mall, Ortigas, Kinetix Kids, launched in late 2023, blends play and therapy to create a dynamic space where children can grow, learn, and thrive. It integrates amusement with professional-led services, combining therapy, play, and fitness in areas like the Astronaut Training Zone, Cosmic Ball Pit, and Moon Slide.
Designed to inspire a love of movement and exploration, Kinetix Kids sets a new standard for purposeful play. Occupational therapist Pilar Balboa and co-owner Louis Gatmaitan explain how Kinetix Kids evolved from a childcare idea into a space focused on children’s growth and development.
“The idea for Kinetix Kids was parked way back,” Balboa said, explaining that what began as a plan for a childcare space for parents working out grew into something far more meaningful. “We didn’t want just to create an entertainment facility. It’s not part of our branding to offer purely play-based services.”
Instead, the concept expanded to include the expertise of occupational therapists, speech therapists, and coaches, blending fun with developmental support. Gatmaitan added, “Our goal was to offer children a place to play while benefiting from professional services. We wanted to ensure that the same level of expertise present in Kinetix Lab extended to Kinetix Kids.”

These elements help children regulate sensory input, improve focus, and achieve therapeutic goals.
