MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has begun to extend assistance to a Filipino domestic worker involved in the death of an employer’s child in Kuwait.

The Philippine embassy in Kuwait earlier expressed shock and deep sadness over the incident, condoling with the bereaved family. The DMW made a similar statement on Saturday, December 28.

“The DMW, through the Philippine embassy and Migrant Workers Office in Kuwait, is closely coordinating with Kuwaiti authorities while extending the necessary assistance to the subject domestic worker, with due regard to Kuwaiti laws and the DMW mandate,” the DMW said.

According to a Gulf News report, the Filipino domestic worker reportedly confessed to the crime, saying she placed the child inside a washing machine out of frustration.

The report said the child’s parents came home hearing their child’s cries. The child, who was rushed to Jaber Hospital, died.

Authorities have taken custody of the Filipino worker.

The Philippine embassy and DMW both said the case was an isolated incident and did not reflect the character of Filipino workers.

“We humbly provide the assurance that this tragic incident is isolated and does not represent the values of Filipinos and overseas Filipino workers who are known for their caring nature, professionalism, dedication and hard work,” the DMW said.

The DMW has yet to respond to queries seeking more details on the case.

Kuwait is among the most popular destinations among overseas Filipino workers, accounting for 6.5% of the distribution of OFWs in 2023, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority. – Rappler.com
